About this property

Welcome to Hotel Halsingland

Hotel Halsingland is housed within historic Fort Seward, featuring three Jeffersonian-style buildings that reflect its early 20th-century military origins. The property’s vintage character is evident throughout, with charming details such as radiator heating and claw-foot tubs, which some guests have found adds unique personality despite the dated features. Rooms vary in size and cater to different needs, including options that accommodate families, with some providing separate spaces for children.

Located on Ft Seward Drive in Haines, Alaska, the hotel offers convenient access to local attractions. It sits about 5 miles from scenic hiking trails on Mount Ripinski and within a short walking distance of the Hammer Museum, making it a practical choice for visitors interested in exploring the area’s natural beauty and cultural sites. The nearby Haines Airport is just 3 miles away, and the property provides an airport shuttle service to enhance guest convenience.

Amenities include free Wi-Fi, complimentary parking, and an airport shuttle, with the hotel maintaining a smoke-free environment. It is also pet-friendly and suitable for families. While there is no formal restaurant on-site, dining options include a seafood-focused bar and free breakfast, supporting a relaxed and informal atmosphere. For travelers needing transportation, Avis Car Rental operates seasonally on-site, receiving positive reviews for service.

Guests frequently highlight the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, noting particularly the attentive management and personalized local advice provided during stays. The hotel offers a quieter, more intimate alternative to larger chain hotels, attracting those who appreciate historic settings and a laid-back experience. However, some reviews mention the dated nature of the rooms and smaller bathroom sizes, suggesting expectations should align with the property’s heritage character.

Cute little hotel about a 5-10 min walk from downtown Haines. It's an old army barracks (from Ft. Seward) and some of the buildings have been repurposed into the hotel. It definitely feels old (like 1900s old) but I think that adds to its charm. Room is heated by radiator, and there is hot and running water (and a claw foot tub in our room!). Our room accommodated 4, but I know there are some rooms that accommodate 2 as well.

Fantastic vintage hotel with amazing views of the harbour and mountains. It's a little dated but very charming. Rooms are clean and comfortable and the manager is super friendly and helpful. Really cool place to stay. Beats the cookie cutter Holiday Inn/Best Western/You Name it hotel chains any day.

Wow - what a find! The photo's show room #4 - what a quaint place. I believe this building was the General's quarters. The proprietor, who checked us in was a charming man - full of information and advice. The best advice was regarding the bear viewings and the drive to Whitehorse (which is spectacular). The room was comfortable, warm & clean with outstanding views.

Customer service/front desk has been very welcoming and helpful from reservation to end. It's like going to your lovely parent's house and they get you anything to be comfortable. Love the classic design, structure, layout. HUGE room and shower with separate kids room. Best location with beautiful view.

Reserved a room for my boss and his wife to rest before their long drive to Anchorage in Haines, AK. After they got off the Ferry at 4:30 a.m., they drove to the hotel. Jeff was so kind and understanding when I made the reservation, with such positivity. He left them the key to their room to help themselves when they arrived. My bosses wife was so pleased with the clean room and the historic nature of the hotel, and she appreciated the hospitality of Jeff working with their schedule. Made their travels back to Anchorage so much more pleasurable.

What a charming spot to spend a night. We (me, Trophy Husband) got off the Alaska Marine Hwy System (ferry) mid day and drove over to check out the hotel where we had reservations. Jeff greeted me and gave us some maps and suggestions of places to see while visiting. (Thank you Jeff, your suggestions were awesome!) Our room had an incredible view of the water and the beds were comfortable. This is a historic property so set your expectations appropriately. The bathrooms are small but adequate. There was a TV and mini fridge for us modern travelers. The best was how quiet this location was! Pro tip: If you have multiple electric devices to charge, bring your own power strip. This saved us without resorting to use the outlet in the bathroom.

Lovely historic hotel. Rooms were simple, comfortable and great views. The hospitality and care from Jeff the owner is what sets this place apart. He helped with local info, had some extra bear spray in the back, and was just attentive and available. Will stay again.
